Why Funeral Flowers Matter

Funeral flowers are more than just a tradition; they convey heartfelt sentiments and offer solace during times of grief. The right arrangement can symbolize love, remembrance, hope, and peace, providing comfort to grieving families. At Foxglove Botanical, we take great care in designing floral tributes that capture the essence of the departed and serve as a fitting farewell.

Different types of flowers carry specific meanings, and they are often selected for funerals based on their symbolism. For example:

  • Lilies symbolize purity and the restored innocence of the soul.

  • Roses represent love, respect, and admiration.

  • Chrysanthemums are often used in funeral arrangements to signify death and mourning, particularly in European cultures. While chrysanthemums can be thought of as a little stiff or old-fashioned, newer varieties can come in many different forms and colours.

  • Orchids convey eternal love and are often associated with beauty and strength.

With the significance of these blooms in mind, let’s explore the various funeral flower arrangements and their costs when working with Foxglove Botanical.

Types of Funeral Flower Arrangements

Funeral flowers come in a range of arrangements, each designed to serve a different purpose during a service or memorial. Understanding the different types of arrangements can help you make the best decision for your floral tribute.

1. Casket Sprays

Casket sprays or casket “toppers” are the large floral arrangements placed directly on top of the casket. They are often designed in consultation with the family and can range from simple, understated designs to elaborate, full-length displays. There are two types of casket sprays:

  • Full-casket sprays cover the entire top of a closed casket. This is the most common arrangement you will see.

  • Half-casket sprays are used when the casket is open during the service.

Cost Range:
At Foxglove Botanical, the cost of a casket spray can vary depending on the size and the types of flowers used. On average, you can expect to pay between £200 and £400 for a casket spray depending on the size of the spray. We offer casket sprays in dimensions of 3ft, 4ft and 5ft. All our casket sprays include beautiful fresh foliage, and are floral foam-free, so they are biodegradable and compostable. We also love to include flowers that the loved one might have particularly appreciated, or foliage from their own garden if this would be meaningful.

2. Standing Sprays and Wreaths

Standing sprays are tall, free-standing floral arrangements displayed on an easel during the funeral service. These can be shaped like a traditional bouquet or as a wreath. We can create living wreaths using plants which can then also be laid on or by a graveside, and which can last for weeks and sometimes months given the right weather conditions.

Cost Range:
The price for a standing spray or wreath at Foxglove Botanical generally ranges from £120 to £300. The final cost will depend on the size, floral variety, and the intricacy of the arrangement.

3. Funeral Bouquets and Sympathy Flowers

Funeral bouquets are smaller arrangements typically placed on tables or near the casket. These are also often sent as sympathy flowers by friends and acquaintances who are not immediate family members. Funeral bouquets can be sent directly to the family's home as a gesture of support.

Cost Range:
At Foxglove Botanical, funeral bouquets and sympathy arrangements can be designed to suit a wide range of budgets. Prices usually start at £65 for smaller bouquets and can go up to £200 for more elaborate, premium arrangements. Customization options are available, allowing you to choose flowers that hold special meaning.

4. Urn Arrangements

For cremation services, urn arrangements are floral designs that surround or complement the urn. These arrangements are typically smaller but can still make a significant impact, offering a beautiful backdrop during the memorial service.

Cost Range:
Urn arrangements at Foxglove Botanical typically range from £75 to £200, depending on the size, type of flowers, and complexity of the design.

5. Pew Decorations and Aisle Markers

Pew decorations and aisle markers are smaller floral designs attached to the ends of pews or chairs in the service venue. These add an elegant touch to the funeral setting and guide guests down the aisle. We can also create posies (we especially love using rosemary for this in a gesture of remembrance) for guests to hold during the service, which can then be laid in tribute or taken home to provide comfort afterwards.

Cost Range:
Pew decorations and aisle markers start at £35 per piece and can go up to £100 per piece depending on the type of flowers and style of the arrangement.

6. Floral Baskets

Floral baskets are versatile arrangements that can be placed around the funeral venue, the home, or the gravesite. These baskets can vary in size and style, making them a flexible option for those looking for a more casual yet beautiful tribute.

Cost Range:
Floral baskets at Foxglove Botanical range from £60 to £150, depending on the size and the types of flowers used.

Factors Influencing the Cost of Funeral Flowers

Several factors influence the overall cost of funeral flowers, including the types of flowers chosen, the size of the arrangement, and the level of customization. Let’s dive into each of these factors:

1. Flower Selection

The types of flowers you choose have a significant impact on the final cost. Some flowers are more expensive due to their rarity, growing conditions, or seasonal availability. Here are some examples:

  • Lilies are a common choice for funerals and are moderately priced.

  • Roses vary in price, but certain varieties like garden roses can increase costs outside of their specific season

  • Orchids and calla lilies are premium options and tend to be more expensive.

  • Chrysanthemums, carnations, and daisies are more affordable and are often used in larger quantities to fill out arrangements.

Foxglove Botanical sources high-quality flowers and offers a wide selection to suit different budgets, so whether you're looking for a luxurious arrangement with orchids or a simple design with seasonal foliage and more simple flowers, we can create a tribute that aligns with your needs.

2. Arrangement Size

Larger arrangements naturally require more flowers, craftsmanship, and resources, which increases the overall cost. For instance, a 5 ft full-casket spray will be more expensive than a half-casket spray due to its size. Similarly, a standing spray that includes multiple layers of flowers will cost more than a simpler design.

3. Seasonal Availability

Some flowers are only available during certain times of the year, and out-of-season blooms can be more expensive due to import costs or limited availability. If you're working with a specific budget, our team at Foxglove Botanical can suggest in-season flowers that achieve a similar look while keeping costs down.

4. Delivery and Setup

Delivery and setup are additional factors to consider when calculating the cost of funeral flowers. Foxglove Botanical offers free delivery to funeral venues across Chippenham, Calne, Melksham, and Devizes within a 10 mile radius of our location near Calne. Usually families will work with Funeral Directors to place and afterwards dispose of the floral tributes but if you need for us to collect the flowers and bring them to another venue for any post-funeral memorial, we may need to charge a fee.

How to Choose Funeral Flowers on a Budget

Funeral flowers can be tailored to suit any budget, and at Foxglove Botanical, we are committed to working with you to create a meaningful arrangement without exceeding your financial limits. Here are some tips for choosing funeral flowers on a budget:

  1. Opt for In-Season Flowers: Choosing flowers that are in season can significantly reduce costs while still providing beautiful results. Within the months of May - October we can use locally-grown British flowers which will not only keep costs lower, but also the flowers will last longer as they haven’t travelled from overseas.

  2. Consider Smaller Arrangements: Instead of opting for larger, more expensive designs, consider smaller arrangements like bouquets or sheafs. These will have a life after the ceremony if guests would like to take them home.

  3. Use More Foliage in Arrangements: Incorporating more affordable flowers (we don’t love the word “filler”!) and plenty of gorgeous foliage alongside fewer premium blooms can help you achieve a lush, full arrangement without the high price tag. Foliage doesn’t have to just mean boring green leaves either - there are so many interesting options we can include, as well as seed heads and berries depending on the season.

  4. Communicate Your Budget: At Foxglove Botanical, we encourage open communication about your budget. We are happy to recommend options that meet your wallet’s needs while still delivering a beautiful and fitting tribute.
